Die beschleunigte Lochfraßgrenze des Warmchlorid-Service-Desinfektionsmittels
For 316L stainless steel sheathed electric heating tubes used in warm (50°C) chloride-containing water with residual chlorine disinfection-such as municipal hot water return lines, treated industrial effluents, or swimming pool heat exchangers-the combination of free chlorine (HOCl/OCl⁻) and pH dramatically accelerates pitting compared to chloride alone. At 50°C, 1000 ppm chloride is typically in the passive range for 316L (no pitting expected for >10 years). Free chlorine additions of 1-3 ppm, however, alter the pitting potential to more negative values and at pH values below 7.0 (where HOCl is the dominant species), pitting can commence within 6-12 months and perforate a 1.5 mm wall within 2 years. The crucial combination for 2-year perforation is: free chlorine >1,5 ppm und pH<7.0 at 50 °C. OCl- is less aggressive - even 3 ppm free chlorine at pH >8.0 is tolerated. Pitting occurs 1-3 years at pH 7.0-7.5 and chlorine >2 ppm.
Bei pH<7.0 the OCP can be higher than Epit and spontaneous pitting occurs.

Durch Chlor beschleunigte Lochfraßkorrosion im Feld
Pitting of a 316L heater in heated chloride water (500–1,500 ppm Cl-) with chlorine residual is normally characterised by small (0.2–1.0 mm diameter), numerous (10–50 pits per cm2) and uniformly distributed pits. The pits are frequently rimmed by a bright cathodic ring with a dark brown or black center (manganese oxide from breakdown of inclusions). Water chemistry records will indicate free chlorine >1-2 ppm und pH-Wert<7.0-7.5. The fix is to elevate pH to 7.5-8.5 with sodium hydroxide, remove chlorine to 1 ppm or upgrade to titanium or Alloy 625.
Free chlorine at >1-1,5 ppm bei pH<7.0-7.5 produces pitting commencement in 6-12 months and perforation in 2 years for 316L stainless steel heater sheaths in 50°C water with 1,000 ppm chloride. At pH >7.5-8.0, 2-3 ppm chlorine can be tolerated, because OCl- is less aggressive. Engineers specifying 316L sheaths for warm chlorinated systems must maintain pH >7,5 (idealerweise 7,8-8,2) und freies Chlor<1.5 ppm for 5 years life. If chlorine >2 ppm oder pH<7.0 cannot be avoided duplex 2205 or titanium upgrade is necessary. The methodology given here relates pH, free chlorine concentration and pitting perforation time at 50°C in 1,000 ppm chloride and allows buyers to define water treatment schemes that prevent disinfectant-accelerated pitting failure.
